Oriens Ex Occidente Lux

Oriens Ex Occidente Lux,“Light from the West”-The University of the West Indies (UWI), established in 1949; three campuses: Cave Hill Barbados, St. Augustine Trinidad and Mona in Jamaica. “The UWI is the region’s premier educational institution. Its faculties offer a wide range of undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs in Humanities and Education, Pure and Applied Sciences, Science and Agriculture, Engineering, Law, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. There is a strong emphasis on Caribbean issues making the UWI the ideal educational institution for local and international students with an interest in Caribbean society”.

A community within a community, campus life re-socializes, integrates, builds and breaks one for the realistic world.  It is often said if one survives university, they are suitable candidates for the working world.  UWI campus is a melting pot of a diversity of cultures.  Students from various countries, class, race and personalities may be seen among the corridors.  Catering to diversity, the campus created and maintains diverse options to soothe its occupants.
With over seven halls of residence and on campus activities UWI manages to be one of the most favored choices for tertiary education.  The campus includes: a Police Station, Student Union, ATMS, Banks, food outlets and countless liming areas. Standing firm against discrimination, sexual harassment and any unlawful behavior; UWI creates the atmosphere of togetherness and sportsmanship hosting inter-faculty games and a general sports day; “The activities provide opportunities to enhance your leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, develop your organizational ability and help to develop your time management, decision making and problem solving abilities. Prospective employers expect a University graduate to possess these competencies”.

Putting aside the academic performances and reputation of excellence of the University, campus life maintains the balance between professionalism and social life.  Hosting some of the best parties such as water parties, and the famous Jouvert during the Carnival Season, UWI is the place to be.
The famous Chapel and Aqueduct are just a few of the historical monuments to be visited on the grounds.  The UWI campus stands as a treasure of social, academic and historical experiences to be engaged in.
“The University of the West Indies is a dynamic, international institution serving the countries of the Commonwealth Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua/Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Christopher-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and the Turks and Caicos Islands”.

There is so much that could be said about this campus, too much even, but just to give a summary and for you to do the rest :)

Set in the heart of many individuals and as the heart of Mona, UWI campus is as the motto suggests…light from the west.

Until next post **toodles**
